The curlew is a very large, tall wader, about the same size as a female pheasant. From February through to July it can be found on its breeding grounds – wet grasslands, farmland, heath and moorlands. From July onwards, curlews head for the UK's coastlines, where they spend the winter. They're often found on mudflats, beaches and coastal grassland, sinking their long, downcurved bill into the ground to pull up worms and other invertebrates.

Conservation status is lassified as red / near threatened.
